10 September 2001.

The sweet bliss of slumber lulls us towards its sanctuary as our lids flutter with the heaviness that the day has brought upon us; it offers us a piece of peace as we drift off to the other side of a pristine landscape on a gently rocking boat that cradles our every crevice with care. We receive a front row ticket in our subconscious thoughts to an alternate universe on another time spectrum that holds visions of loved ones, work promotions, inspiration, world travels, super powers…

Heroism.

An act that the majority of us can only carry out in the deepest parts of our dreams. Something so deeply rooted as equating yourself to that of a Marvel character has quite a difficult time digging itself out of an endless abyss of importance. Although items and objects serve as a good scale to measure a level of tangible success against, the hands of time eventually knead themselves into the weakest portions of these physical entities in which they are broken down and decomposed over every inch. The only things in life that are positively everlasting are the impactful gestures that perpetually latch themselves onto the lives of those around you, whether it was done purposefully or indirectly. Those are the instances that form a cape upon the backs of a developing hero.

Eternal slumber is quite an intimidating venture that not all are prepared to partake in. It’s one that pushes us to the edge of our comforters as we toss and turn in anticipation, ironically depriving us of the sleep that is sought after to assist in bringing us to our comfort zones to momentarily ease us of this inevitable reality. Nobody will ever truly feel as if they have established a solid foundation upon which to set up base to fully steady themselves and hold fast for this intense of a challenge. Lingering ideas and notions that remain restless in the backs of our minds on how much more we have to offer to the world and everything we can do for the betterment of ourselves and others keep us on the constant move from ever coming in contact with this faceless fear. It’s only when irreparable exhaustion decides to overtake our system that we can genuinely achieve permanent rest and readiness for our concluding ultimatum.

There’s a saying that highlights “It’s what you do in the dark that puts you in the light.”

The lives of 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, 8 paramedics, 2066 workers, and 246 passengers enveloped themselves in the darkness that swallowed their rooms whole with the flick of a light switch as they scurried into bed on this night 18 years ago. They may have not been privy to the happenstances that were to occur with the rising of the following sun, but the universe could not have prepared them more to become the light that would forever shine down upon us as we make our way down the path of life that will eventually lead us to their embraces once again.

I bet their dreams that night consisted of nothing but an authentic utopia of ideal perfection, happiness, and sunshine.

Sleep well and warmly tonight as you wrap yourself tightly in a blanket carefully threaded together with love for your cherished ones, values, and moments that you hold so near and dear to your heart.

And weave into the fibers of your being the sensation of bliss that allowed you to sleep soundly on the night of 10 September 2001. Carry that with you forever as you keep pushing forward while grasping the legacies and memories of those you love.

#NeverForget
