I’m scared.
Things in the span of our lifetime are so uncertain, and although this is a known statement that finds itself rolling off the tongues of the vast majority of the population, the unknown that lies within this fact can still arouse quivering feelings.
There are people who will fight their whole lives to control these things that lay outside their range of power, hoping that even the slightest bit of preparation will give them a leg-up to come closer to predicting the outcome. Try as they might, anything has the potential to happen, and one small altercation can contain the ability to throw any perceivable set conclusion off course.
Although the external cannot be regulated by our own means, at least we have the internal to tame… right?
This isn’t necessarily the case.
I find myself losing more and more faith in the validity of this ideology. The amount of times that I have yearned for inner workings of optimism to fill my core when I was carrying a dark heaviness are a myriad extending infinitely beyond the crest of the horizon in my sight. In a sense, you have to find the strength to “fake it until you make it,” but on the days that you are too tired to fight, this negativity can overcome you like a Poseidon’s tidal wave, drowning you in your own overwhelming thoughts that have harsher serrations than a butcher’s knife. Now, don’t get me wrong, it is human nature to experience every emotion under the sun, albeit if there is a weighted scale to keep them all in balance. In fact, it’s actually a blessing to be able to do so because times of dread will serve as a complete contrast to moments of jubilation, allowing them to shine brighter for longer with an excess of appreciation illuminating them.
There is no such thing as a perfect day, but instead of being content with those that come close to achieving this feat, we sometimes tend to focus on the minute percentage that may have not gone our way. When you look towards the skies for a dreary forecast, you will find the rain that every looming cloud holds. However, if you search for light in times of darkness, your attention will immediately grasp ahold of any sign of sunshine. Focusing on the latter on a consistent basis will train your mind to develop an innate outlook that aligns with this.
It’s all about taking everything in stride; as much as we may wish the time away in some instances, this life of ours can be a marathon, rather than a sprint, if we consciously choose to take moments out of every day to grab onto the beautiful stillness that is caught in the haste of the chaos encompassing us. You may get lost along the way, but using positivity as your North Star will guide you out of the fog of any situation.
